By Michelle Guertin This month's provincial highlight will take a dive into Québec's emergency management organization. Stats Canada's Emergency Preparedness report in 2014 exposed a few interesting observations on Québec's status of preparedness. The study showed that the proportion of Québec residents who reported various preparedness measures (exit plans, important document safeguarding, vehicle emergency supplies, etc.) was considerably lower than all the other provinces combined. Since then, the province has taken notable steps forward in encouraging and promoting emergency management! Let's dive in! Québec En Alerte
The ministry of security highlights the social responsibility of its residents by noting that they are obliged to intervene in public locations, work sites as well as within their communities when there are people in need of aid/assistance. Residents are also encouraged to volunteer within their municipalities when a disaster event occurs. If you want to know more about the residents’ responsibilities for public security, check out this link. The ministry of public security will coordinate and facilitate action through certain entities and can also assist municipalities until they are in a place to recover. Furthermore, they are also in a position to provide these victims with financial assistance if required. Another fun fact about this province is that the Red Cross is the public authorities’ main partner in providing services to people affected by disaster. If you want more information about this partnership, checkout their website! The province of Québec has also announced the allocation of significant funds in emergency services for isolated regions, notably $1,229,365 for the region of Chaudière-Appalaches and $833,807 for the Bas Saint-Laurent region.
